Eligibility Assessment Services are utilized to determine if an individual would benefit from inclusion in ongoing Music Therapy treatment.
Many Eligibility Assessments are provided by request of a student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP), but can be provided to any individual at
any time.
Eligibility Assessments provided at the request of a student's IEP team follow a very specific format outlined in the Special Education Music
Therapy Assessment Profile (SEMTAP) to determine if the student is eligible for services under the guidelines of the Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act (IDEA). It is important to remember that the IDEA guidelines are extremely specific and a child that benefits from Music Therapy
may not be eligible under IDEA.
Eligibility Assessments provided at the request of an individual, group, or organization examine a wide range of skills. The therapist will
determine the physical, communication, emotional, psychological, spiritual, and musical status of each client and will also determine if the
client responds positively to Music Therapy interventions. These types of Eligibility Assessments are not limited by federal or state regulations
to determine a client's eligibility.
