Private lessons reinforce all education the student receives in the classroom and provide additional instruction and individualized preparation time for specific events in the student's musical career.  Please review the following information on the type of lessons that are provided:

Beginning Lessons

Beginning lessons are generally taken by students in the first two years learning their instrument.  While this generally consists of middle school students, it can be a student of any age beginning an instrument for the first time - from a senior in high school wanting to learn a new instrument for their college auditions to an adult who wants to learn guitar for the first time.

Beginning lessons focus on correct posture, breath production (when appropriate), tone production, care for your instrument, and beginning theory (i.e., the ability to read music).  Beginning lessons are provided on the following instruments:

  •  Clarinet

  •  Flute

  •  Saxophone

  •  Percussion

  •  Guitar

  •  Piano

Intermediate Lessons

Intermediate lessons are generally taken by students from their third year on their instrument until Advanced Lessons are indicated.  Intermediate lessons continue to reinforce posture, breath production, tone, and beginning theory and incorporate more advanced theory and helping the student learn to interpret music for themselves.

Intermediate lessons are provided on the following instruments:

  •  Clarinet
  •  Flute
  •  Saxophone
  •  Guitar
  •  Piano

Advanced Lessons

Advanced lessons are taken by students who are interested in further developing their skills on their instrument or more specialized music skills.  The following Advanced lessons are provided:

  •  Clarinet - Introduce students to more advanced clarinet literature and continue to refine skills to allow for the highest quality tone production.

  •  Drum Major: Drum Major lessons are provided prior to auditions and throughout the marching band season to assist the student in being the most effective conductor and leader possible for the ensemble.  Lessons include vocal commands, posture, conducting, cuing, and general leadership skills.

  •  Improvisation: Improvisation lessons are provided for students interested in learning how to play music without needing written music.  Improvisation is frequently utilized in jazz bands and is becoming more popular in pop music.  Some music theory skills are needed before improvisation lessons can be provided (i.e., knowledge of scales, major and minor keys, understanding of piano is helpful but not necessary).
