Private lessons reinforce all education the
student receives in the classroom and provide additional instruction and
individualized preparation time for specific events in the student's musical
career. Please
review the following information on the type of lessons that are provided:
Beginning Lessons
Beginning lessons
are generally taken by students in the first two years learning their
instrument. While this generally consists of middle school
students, it can be a student of any age beginning an instrument for the
first time - from a senior in high school wanting to learn a new
instrument for their college auditions to an adult who wants to learn
guitar for the first time.
Beginning lessons focus on correct posture, breath production (when
appropriate), tone production, care for your instrument, and beginning
theory (i.e., the ability to read music). Beginning lessons are
provided on the following instruments:
Clarinet
Flute
Saxophone
Percussion
Guitar
Piano
Intermediate Lessons
Intermediate lessons are generally
taken by students from their third year on their instrument until
Advanced Lessons are indicated. Intermediate lessons continue to
reinforce posture, breath production, tone, and beginning theory and
incorporate more advanced theory and helping the student learn to
interpret music for themselves.
Intermediate lessons are provided on
the following instruments:
Clarinet
Flute
Saxophone
Guitar
Piano
Advanced Lessons
Advanced lessons are taken by
students who are interested in further developing their skills on
their instrument or more specialized music skills. The following
Advanced lessons are provided:
Clarinet
- Introduce students to more advanced clarinet literature and continue to
refine skills to allow for the highest quality tone production.
Drum
Major: Drum Major lessons are provided prior to auditions and
throughout the marching band season to assist the student in being the
most effective conductor and leader possible for the ensemble.
Lessons include vocal commands, posture, conducting, cuing, and general
leadership skills.
Improvisation: Improvisation
lessons are provided for students interested in learning how to play music
without needing written music. Improvisation is frequently utilized
in jazz bands and is becoming more popular in pop music. Some music
theory skills are needed before improvisation lessons can be provided
(i.e., knowledge of scales, major and minor keys, understanding of piano
is helpful but not necessary).
